"The Smell of Money" - CD Launch
June 15th @ Free Times Cafe (College, W. of Spadina) - 8pm
The "smell of money" was what apologists for
the pulp and poison industry call the exhaust fumes emanating from the
enormous smoke stacks standing atop pulp & paper mills. The first time I
smelled the smoke stack in Campbell River, B.C. in 1996 I became
wretchedly ill. A couple of the folks who played on the recording have
also consented to play at this show. They are each a master in their own
field.
Kevin Barrett's a jazz musician 'par excellance', with his own band -
The Kevin Barrett Group. He has also backed up many many jazz singers
and also one other political singer, now retired, who calls herself
"Sage". He was the producer and engineer of this CD and appears
musically on both slide and electric guitars. He found several of the
other musicians who graciously consented to appear on the CD.
John Millard comes from another whole musical stream, folk music via
many theatre gigs like the horse caravan productions which toured the
west of Canada, including the Gulf Islands, where I first saw one of
their outdoor shows. But just calling it "folk music" would be like
calling Anne Lindsay just a "fiddle player". These musicians transcend
their instruments. John's banjo has flown on to something akin to
folk-jazz. He also has a long custom instrument called a cittern. It
reminds me somewhat of a very long mandolin on steroids. It's deep,
resonant boom can be heard on some of the cuts on the CD. John's band
is called Happy Day. You may have heard him on CBC radio.
The time of this show is 8 pm, June 15, 2006.
The venue is the Free Times Cafe, at 320 College Street, just west of
Spadina.
The cover charge is $7, but if you pay $20 you will get the CD also. The
CD contains 15 songs. Questions? 416-534-2066
If you want a good seat, phone the Free Times Cafe at 416-967-1078 and
reserve for dinner a little before the show. I can't control the seating
otherwise. 50 folks get into the back room with the stage if we pack the
chairs around the tables. The rest will have to be in the outer,
overflow room and peek in through a doorway.
